Re: Indulgences are a bit of a problem for me… POST # 1

So, with indulgences, who decides how much is enough? Some of these things just seem far fetched to me. Who decides how many prayers is enough to remove the temporal effects of sin?

Why would ANY of this be necessary? Christ paid it ALL on the cross. Also, what is meant by “merits”? I’d really appreciate some clarification.[/QUOTE]

Hi Julie 🙂 I like your question and LOVE your final point.

The answer is profound and complex, but I’ll give it a try in the space allotted. IF you have additional questions PLEASE send me a PM. By necessity this is the very short version.

The issues to be considered are:

1. The degree of God’s Love

2. The Role of Christ CC in manifesting this Love

3. The actual Natures [PLURAL] of sin

4. The Authority of the CC: source and references

5. Indulgences defined and explained

God’s love is unlimited and to humanity, its quite incomprehensible. It goes back to why and how God Created us.

Why: Look up Isaiah 43:7,21. We are created because the manner of our creation causes us to be the most complex and god-like of all of Creation. [Gen. 1:26-27]. Humanity alone has the potential and ability to Know, Love, Serve, Obey, and THANK GOD for who and what He is.

That God creates us for this precise reason and THEN PERMITS us to decide to do; or NOT to do this, is evidence of God’s Love. Add to this the Incarnation; Christ Passion and Death, and then [to me at least], the greatest evidence of God’s love is remaining with us; REALLY with us; in Catholic holy Communion. God not just mere mortal; but a by free choice; inanimate objects to be ridiculed, mocked, ignored, and far too rarely; consumed for our Spiritual benefit.

Look carefully at these three passages: Mt. 16:19 “I Jesus] will do /did] give you [Peter / CC] []ALL OF] the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Jn. 20:20-22 “When he [Jesus] had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples [Apostles] were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Here Christ officially founds His CC. Then He gives the same Godly powers the He Christ has to Peter and His Church. This Means among a great many other things that the Church CAN LOVE and Christ Loves us.

Reply #3. The actual Natures [PLURAL] of sin

All sin is public! All sin effects self; others; the church and the community of God’s beloved. All sin requires repentance, contrition, confession [4 mortal sins], and “payback” both as restitution and for punishment.

So if one steals money: the money taken MUST be paid back. All sins accumulate a debt that too must be repaid before anyone can enter into heaven. One Must be PERFECT in order to enter into God’s Presence: Rev. 21: 27 “But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor any one who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” … Mt. 5:48 “ You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Reply #4. The Church authority. Look again at the “key’s to heaven” passage and not the authority to “bind and Loose.” This is unlimited power to govern; to make or cancel laws, to act in the name of and in the Power of Christ Himself. Above in the verse where Christ FOUNDS the Cc; the next passages is: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The Church both in the Power of God; and imitating God’s Love for us, institutes a means whereby humanity; both alive and dead [praying for the dead], can quicken the necessary “perfection process”, so necessary for most of us. [Those dying in unconfessed MS go to hell],

By developing a pay-back process [indulgences] that is carefully crafted and monitored; effected by certain prescribed and mandated prayers, or good actions, that off-set the unseen accrual of all sin. This leads to an eventual perfection acceptable to God. Sorry out of space.

PM me if you want further information.

God Bless,
Pat
