The power of the key’s CCC 981-983

981 After his Resurrection, Christ sent his apostles “so that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations.” [“SHOULD”AND COULD] The apostles and their successors carry out this “ministry of reconciliation,” not only by announcing to men God’s forgiveness merited for us by Christ, and calling them to conversion and faith; but also by communicating to them the forgiveness of sins in Baptism, and reconciling them with God and with the Church through the power of the keys, received from Christ:
[The Catholic Church ALONE was given and] has received the keys for the Kingdom of heaven so that, in her, sins may be forgiven through Christ’s blood and the Holy Spirit’s action. In this Church, the soul dead through sin comes back to life in order to live with Christ, whose grace has saved us.

982 “There is no offense, however serious, that the Church cannot forgive. {Through Sacramental Confession} “There is no one, however wicked and guilty, who may not confidently hope for forgiveness, provided his repentance is honest. Christ who died for all men desires that in his Church the gates of forgiveness should always be open to anyone who turns away from sin.” {This “honesty” is made manifest through changing one’s life}

983 “Catechesis strives to awaken and nourish in the faithful faith in the incomparable greatness of the risen Christ’s gift to his Church: the mission and the power to forgive sins through the ministry of the apostles and their successors:

The Lord wills that his disciples possess a tremendous power: that his lowly servants accomplish in his name all that he did when he was on earth.531

[Catholic] Priests have received from God a power that he has given neither to angels nor to archangels . . . . God above confirms what priests do here below.

Were there no forgiveness of sins in the Church, there would be no hope of life to come or eternal liberation. Let us thank God who has given his Church such a gift”
In praying the Lord’s Prayer, Christians of all denomination say {or ought to say}
The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. {Has two meanings: First; give to us Catholic Holy Communion; Christ Himself; & Secondly: then, what we need for our daily substance….}

And forgive us our trespasses, is NOT to be separated from the First Petition of “THY Divine Will BE “DONE!” {Sins are forgive MY way {John 20:19-23; not as mortal men presume, assume and to willfully demand of Me”

As we forgive them that trespass against us.

This petition is too seldom addressed. It means exactly what Christ said: … “I WILL FORGIVE YOU TO THE EXACT AND PRECISE DEGREE THAT YOU FORGIVE EVERYONE FOR EVERYTHING” and no more!

Matthew 6: 12-15 “forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen. For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences.

And lead us not into temptation, is necessarily tied into” how our trespasses WILL be forgiven”…

But deliver us from evil. Is another way to ask God to teach us to “love”

… 1-John 3:23-24 “And this is his commandment that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us. And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”

For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.

These final three statements are, our prayers summation, are in a sense, a covenant that we freely make with God; each and every time we say this prayer, assuring Him that we DO understand what we are saying; & what we ARE praying, and that we Do understand that He IS “in-charge.” He alone can and does have the Power and Authority to alone determine how our sins WILL BE conditionally forgiven by Him
1st. as we freely choose to forgive everyone, for everything

2nd. As Christ has empowered His Catholic Priest’ IN HIS NAME, through Sacramental Confession:

John 20:19-23 “Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples {Apostles} were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: Peace be to you. And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.”

John 17:14-20 “4] I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world; as I also am not of the world. [15] I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from evil. They are not of the world, as I also am not of the world. Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me”
“Amen” Means “I [DO!] Believe! And cements our covenant.

Non Catholics very often attempt to make a huge deal out of “Peter” NOT being “the Rock” Jesus Choose to “build his church [singular] on. They can’t prove in biblically, or historically; but never give up the attempt, as they have to refute this evident teaching in order to begin to justify their very existence as an alternative and competing faith, church and religion to the ONE founded and desired by God. If Jesus did not give all of the Keys’ [heaven access] to Peter, and through Peter today’s Catholic Church; to whom DID Jesus give them? It is impossible that Christ waited over one thousand years and the Great Eastern Schism or 1,500 years for the Protestant Reformation to do so.

The POWER of ”the Key’s” is grounded factually, biblically and historically on the reality of: One God; One set of Faith beliefs, and One Church. AMEN!

Matthew 16: 13-20 {WITH explanations from the Douay Bible} “And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is? [14] But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. [15] Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?

[16] Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. [17] And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [19]And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven. [20] Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.

[18] Thou art Peter: As St. Peter, by divine revelation, here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of Christ; so in recompense of this faith and profession, our Lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him: viz., that he to whom he had already given the name of Peter, signifying a rock, St. John 1. 42, should be a rock indeed, of invincible strength, for the support of the building of the church; in which building he should be, next to Christ himself, the chief foundation stone, in quality of chief pastor, ruler, and governor; and should have accordingly all fullness of ecclesiastical power, signified by the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

[18] Upon this rock: The words of Christ to Peter, spoken in the vulgar language of the Jews which our Lord made use of, were the same as if he had said in English, Thou art a Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church. So that, by the plain course of the words, Peter is here declared to be the rock, upon which the church was to be built: Christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same. Where also note, that Christ, by building his house, that is, his church, upon a rock, has thereby secured it against all storms and floods, like the wise builder, St. Matt. 7. 24, 25.

[18] The gates of hell: That is, the powers of darkness, and whatever Satan can do, either by himself, or his agents. For as the church is here likened to a house, or fortress, built on a rock; so the adverse powers are likened to a contrary house or fortress, the gates of which, that is, the whole strength, and all the efforts it can make, will never be able to prevail over the city or church of Christ. By this promise we are fully assured, that neither idolatry, heresy, nor any pernicious error whatsoever shall at any time prevail over the church of Christ.

[19] Loose upon earth: The loosing the bands of temporal punishments due to sins, is called an indulgence; the power of which is here granted

Ephesians 4:1-7 “I therefore, a prisoner in the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called, With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity. Careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. One body {Church} and one Spirit; as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all. But to every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the giving of Christ”

Ephesians 2: 18-20 “And coming, he preached peace to you that were afar off, and peace to them that were nigh. For by him we have access both in one Spirit to the Father. Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners; but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and the chosen of God, Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone”

Luke 9:1-2 “Then calling together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick”

Acts 5:29 “But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men.”

Matthew 28: 16-20 & Mark 16:14-15 “And the eleven disciples {Apostles} went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Go therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you {and taught personally to YOU”!} and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”

So this final teaching in Matthew supports and confirms “the Key’s” as well as the Apostles, and through them today’s Catholic Church BEING the One and only ne Founded, desired, guided and guarded; who is empowered to forgive our sins in Sacramental Confession, and through whom ALL salvation must and mysteriously DOES flow. Amen!
