Mary: … “our mom”
by: Patrick Miron
Jer.44: 25“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have declared with your mouths, and have fulfilled it with your hands, saying, `We will surely perform our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her.’ Then confirm your vows and perform your vows! “
Some struggle with this reality, of Mary; God‘s “Mother,“ who is in a real sense, fulfilling Christ desire to have His Mother Mary, also be “mother“ to ALL humanity. Yet it’s clearly the Devine Will of Christ, and a enormous Potential source of AID and Comfort for all who accept and advantage its reality. I suspect this is most often caused because while many “know of Mary as the Mother of our God”, they don’t really know much about her, fearing that such knowledge might just get in the way of our First Commandment obligation of “knowing and worshiping Christ ALONE.” Yet the very opposite comes FAR nearer the truth. There’s NO competition here; both Mary and her Son desire the exact same things. Our salvation. And we Catholics don’t “worship” Mary; we only honor and reverence her as Christ “Mother” and the one closest to Him and able to therefore aid us in knowing and loving Her son, as only a mother can do.
This limited understanding; this ignorance about Mary, and God’s desired use of her for our benefit is not a part of God’s salvation plan for humanity. Mary’s proper role is supported biblically, and it permits us to know God’s feelings; God’s special Love, God’s Own Will regarding Mary and how HE intends to USE her. Exactly How and Why this took place cannot be fully known until we too are in God’s Presence and can ask Him. But we can know it’s Christ Will, and we DO know that Mary can be beneficial as our intercessor. Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe have all been verified independently and proven multiple times by non-Catholic scientist and doctors. MANY have been cured and MANY have found Christ through Mary. These events exemplify just how our God desires and Does use Mary for our benefit.
John 19: 23-28 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom; so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfil the scripture, “They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Mag’dalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, [who represents all of humanity here] “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), “I thirst.”
Even with the clearest of language; the totality of Christ complete meanings are often similar to an onion, having many layers of understanding. Here we ought to note that Christ while near death, and hanging on the Cross, recognizes His Mother and refers to her in the UNIVERSAL term of “women.” Then seeing also His beloved John, He uses him to represent all of humanity [who’s sins have placed Christ on this very Cross], and tells John that Mary is now TOO, His and OUR mother as well. Notice immediately after having done this John NOTES: “IT IS FINISHED” AND … “I THIRST”… “It is finished” is to be understood [one of multiple lteachings here] that While He is near death; He is leaving us in “the good and loving care of HIS MOTHER”. The “I Thirst” in this context is to make us aware that HE DESIRES to do even more than what He has just done, by Dying on the Cross for us.
Christ as our Good and Perfect God with total consistency, teaches always and every time, by choosing the most precise, the most descriptive and the clearest possible words to TEACH what He is proclaiming for OUR benefit [not his]. God desires that man actually KNOW His Devine Will for us; because that is the foundation for His Judgment of us at our death. Mary can aid us in this effort.
What mother doesn’t want her son to be known, and to be admired and honored when they are worthy of such? Why would Mary be different in this regard? And because she alone of all created women, was found worthy for this singular privilege, this once in the history of the world event, it seems reasonable that She hold a very special place in God’s heart. When we add to this the fact that enormous personal sacrifice was in an absolute sense expected, and required of Mary to permit her to complete this role, which is critical to ALL salvation efforts of her fellow-man; we ought to be even more amazed, more desirous of her assistance.
Mary had to be willing to renounce her virginity; after having made a vow to dedicate herself as a ‘temple Virgin” to God. Jewish VOWS were SACRED! This was no simple task.
Mary became pregnant before being married to Joseph which could have gotten her “stoned to death” in violation of Jewish Law.
Mary, a teenage girl had to except in COMPLETE FAITH: that She had been chosen from “all women” to become the mother of God; bearer and bringer of the Long awaited Messiah
Mary had to accept :“how can this be: I know not man?” that God would somehow impregnate her AND then keep her alive while maintaining her virginity.
Mary thought she’d have to TRY to explain being pregnant to Joseph [her espoused] But God intervened on her behalf. Further evidence of her exalted position.
Mary had to BE PERFECT because God is Perfect and Christ too HAD TO BE PERFECT to be both GOD & man.
Mary herself HAD to be conceived without Original sin [ a singular honor, wrought by the absolutely necessity of Her needed Perfection to fulfill this task; this role. [This was accomplished through the merits of the Son she was to give birth too. … TIME does not exist for God].
Mary HAD to then cooperate with Gods graces FREELY; Willingly, and Completely by Her own choice and Never, not once ever sin. Certainly God knew she would accomplish this; BUT it HAD to be Mary’s Freewill choice to do so.
Mary gave birth to the Son of God in a stable and never once complained
Mary along with Joseph had to provide for, protect and teach Jesus as he grew in human “wisdom” [Luke 2:52]
Mary followed Christ and aided Him in His Ministry
Mary rushed Christ death by “asking” him to perform the miracle of water to wine at the wedding feast in Cana starting the series of events that would lead to His death. John 2: 1-5 “And the third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee: and the mother of Jesus was there. And Jesus also was invited, and his disciples, to the marriage. And the wine failing, the mother of Jesus saith to him: They have no wine. And Jesus saith to her: Woman, what is that to me and to thee? my hour is not yet come. His mother saith to the waiters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.”
Mary would suffer more intently WITH Her Son than any other human person. And Never once complained. Never became bitter.
Mary who understood that Jesus WAS GOD and was dying because of OUR [your’s and mine] sins; was with Christ as he Died; AND MERE MOMENTS BEFORE THE END OF HIS LIFE; MARY ACCEPTED WITHOUT RESSERVATION TO BE THE “MOM” OF ALL THOSE WHO HAD JUST KILLED; JUST BUTCHERED HER SON! WHY? BECAUSE OF HER TOTAL AND COMLETE LOVE OF GOD; AND ALL THAT GOD LOVED SHE WOULD LOVE TOO! Mary stood at the foot of the Cross and heard the words of Her Son from the Cross: Luke 23:34 “And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And Mary, following her Son’s example and in humble and TOTAL obedience to HIS DEVINE WILL, forgave each of us too; for our role in the Crucifixion of Christ her God; her Son, because She was now our “mom.”
The fear that we catholics “worship” Mary is without any foundation of truth. The Catholic church teaches that ‘Worship” is to reserved to God alone.
Catechism of the Catholic Church:
#2135 “You shall worship the Lord your God” [ALONE] (Mt 4:10). Adoring God, praying to him, offering him the worship that belongs to him, fulfilling the promises and vows made to him are acts of the virtue of religion which fall under obedience to the first commandment.
# 266 “Now this is the Catholic faith: We worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity, without either confusing the persons or dividing the substance; for the person of the Father is one, the Son’s is another, the Holy Spirit’s another; but the Godhead of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal” (Athanasian Creed: DS 75; ND 16).
# 2132 The Christian veneration of images is not contrary to the first commandment which proscribes idols. Indeed, “the honor rendered to an image passes to its prototype,” and “whoever venerates an image venerates the person portrayed in it.” The honor paid to sacred images is a “respectful veneration,” not the adoration due to God alone:
Religious worship is not directed to images in themselves, considered as mere things, but under their distinctive aspect as images leading us on to God incarnate. The movement toward the image does not terminate in it as image, but tends toward that whose image it is.”
# 2679 Mary is the perfect Orans (pray-er), a figure of the Church. When we pray to her, we are adhering with her to the plan of the Father, who sends his Son to save all men. Like the beloved disciple we welcome Jesus’ mother into our homes, for she has become the mother of all the living. We can pray with and to her. The prayer of the Church is sustained by the prayer of Mary and united with it in hope.
# 722 The Holy Spirit prepared Mary by his grace. It was fitting that the mother of him in whom “the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” should herself be “full of grace.” She was, by sheer grace, conceived without sin as the most humble of creatures, the most capable of welcoming the inexpressible gift of the Almighty. It was quite correct for the angel Gabriel to greet her as the “Daughter of Zion”: “Rejoice.” It is the thanksgiving of the whole People of God, and thus of the Church, which Mary in her canticle lifts up to the Father in the Holy Spirit while carrying within her the eternal Son
By FAR, the most common prayer; the” Hail Mary” to AND THROUGH MARY to her Son Jesus; because ALL Catholics prayer are aimed AT GOD through the intercession [Good Will] of Mary and or the saint we choose to pray THROUGH Is of biblical origin:
Hail Mary, [Lk. 1:28]
Full of Grace [Lk. 1:28]
The Lord is with thee [Lk 1:27]
Blessed are you among all women [Lk 1:42]
And Blessed in the fruit of your womb: Jesus [Lk. 1;42]
Holy Mary [Lk.1: 28]
Mother of God [Lk.1:35]
Pray for us sinners [our added catholic petition]
Now and at the hour of our death
Amen” [I BELIEVE!]
We ought to emulate Mary herself who has taught us how She prayed to her Son:
Luke 1: 36-55 “And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren: Because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant [John the Baptist] leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him>“
So all ought to LOVE and reverence Mary:
It is God’s perfect Will and plan for us to do so
She alone was perfect and we too must become
She alone is the Mother of God and by Christ will; also our Mother
While the church neither requires or mandates prayers To /Through Mary; because of Her exulted position in heaven. BECAUSE of How much Jesus Loves Her; there can be no more effective Intercessor to plead our case than ‘MOM.” Amen! No-one knows Her Son as well as Mom.
